Catlins Search Rescue

Join Catlins Search and Rescue

Catlins Search and Rescue is a volunteer organisation working closely with the NZ Police to help locate people who are lost, missing or injured in the Catlins region. Based in Owaka (South Otago), its members patrol rugged bush, coastline and farmland day and night (24/7) in all weather. Volunteers respond to incidents such as searches for missing hikers, hunters or elderly residents (and sometimes even marine searches) in the Catlins District.

  • Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds – no prior SAR experience or super fitness is needed. Catlins SAR welcomes practical-minded people (outdoor enthusiasts, tech-interested helpers, etc.) who are reliable, calm under pressure and eager to learn.

  • Comprehensive training and support: All volunteers receive LandSAR-led courses in navigation, search techniques, first aid and radio communications. The team holds regular practice sessions with experienced mentors.

  • A variety of roles: Field search team members (hiking or in vehicles/boats), radio/communications operators, coordinators and logistics support. Other roles (search dog handlers, technical rescue or planning) are also possible. In fact, LandSAR notes you “don’t need to be outdoors focused” for many positions – there’s a place for a range of talents.

  • Commitment expected: Volunteers should be prepared for regular training (typically monthly sessions plus a few weekends a year) and to respond to call-outs at any time (day or night). A dependable, team-oriented attitude and a willingness to follow directions under pressure are required.

This opportunity offers hands-on experience, genuine team camaraderie and practical skills in search and rescue. Volunteers become part of a dedicated local team, receiving full support and training while serving the community in challenging and rewarding ways.
