Balclutha sits on the banks of the mighty Clutha river with the Balclutha Bridge one of the south’s best known landmarks. It is Clutha’s commercial centre with a major supermarket and good range of other shops. Balclutha is the service town for the agricultural region of South Otago.
The town has excellent recreational facilities with golf, swimming and the Cross Recreational Centre. If you fancy a stroll then saunter through the Blair Athol Walkway, which leads to an amazing rhododendron dell.
Balclutha is aptly called “Big River Town” but it wasn’t always named after the Clutha River with early Maori calling it “te awa Mata-au” or “the river with surface current”. Scottish settlers decided to change it using a word derived from their native gaelic.
