Conservation Support – Forest & Bird South Otago

Join a passionate team working to protect and restore the unique biodiversity of South Otago. Forest & Bird South Otago is involved in hands-on conservation mahi across The Catlins. Whether you're into digging, trapping, planting, or promoting environmental action – there's something here for you.

Volunteers play a vital role in restoring native habitats, caring for local flora, and protecting wildlife in the stunning Catlins region.

Activities may include:

  • Pest control: Track predators and maintain predator traps in order to protect native species
  • Habitat restoration: Assist with regular weed control and planting days at key sites like Otanomomo Scientific Reserve and Dutton’s Bridge (Owaka River)
  • Native plant nursery work: Propagate and care for 2000+ plants a year
  • Wildlife monitoring & education: Share knowledge and provide support to community and youth groups
  • Creative or strategic support: Design resources, manage social media, and generally stand up for nature

Ideal for:
Nature lovers, students, families, retirees, groups or anyone keen to take action in their own backyard.

Requirements

No experience required – just a willingness to get involved. Great for those who enjoy working outdoors and learning about conservation.

What to bring:
Sturdy footwear, outdoor clothing, curiosity about the natural world, and a sense of humour.
