Big River Homes

Big River Homes, based in Balclutha, designs and builds high-quality transportable homes for customers across Otago & Southland. With a focus on controlled, yard-based builds and smart design, they deliver energy-efficient homes that meet the needs of modern living.

Co-directed by Mark Van Asperen and Adam Turnbull, Big River Homes is committed to creating opportunities for the next generation of tradespeople. Through a strong partnership with Otago Polytechnic and South Otago High School, they offer practical learning experiences to help young people explore a future in construction.

What they do:

• Design and build fully transportable, energy-efficient homes

• Construct homes a purpose-built yard, offering six spaces which homes can be constructed on

• Deliver houses to sites throughout Otago & Southland

• Partner with Otago Polytechnic & SOHS to support hands-on trades training in South Otago

Learning & Career Pathways:

• Big River Trades Academy (BCATS Level 3) – students can gain real experience by building homes alongside skilled professionals

• Apprenticeships and further training through Otago Polytechnic and BCITO

• Opportunities to observe and be part of the construction process in a safe, supported environment

• Build the skills needed to pursue a career as a builder, construction labourer, or site manager
