Purakaunui Bay is a simply stunning stretch of Catlins coast boasts the area’s highest sea cliffs and has a forgotten jurassic world feel.
This wild bay has witnessed the largest winter waves ever recorded in New Zealand and is a special surfing spot framed by a beautiful bush backdrop.
It’s a great place to spot seals and sea lions and there is also an amazing DOC campground with basic facilities right next to the beach. The access road is not tar sealed.
Just up the road are the famous falls which share the same name.
