Tides Getting Here Clutha Attractions

The Clutha/Mata-Au river is literally the beating heart of our district and what it is named after.

This incredible emerald green gem is New Zealand's largest, fastest and most voluminous river.

The flow is so rapid it even puts it on a par with World giants like the Amazon.

It definitely helps the Southern Hemisphere's last public punt.

The Tuapeka Mouth Ferry runs daily and just goes with the flow!

Just a short drive further north you reach the Rongahere gorge which is stunning! Lush bush frames the river's majesty and makes it look even more impressive if that is possible.

The Clutha was the focus of the 1860's Otago gold rush and today is the centre piece of the Clutha Gold Cycle Trail through Lawrence.

It flows under the famous arched bridge in Balclutha and down to Kaitangata past the veggie growing island of Inch Clutha where it finally pours in the Pacific.

Oh and it's a great spot to do some fishing...

Why is it such a mad colour? Well the terrific turquoise or exciting emerald hue comes from glacial melting at its source above Lake Wanaka.
