Tides Getting Here Clutha Attractions

The mighty Clutha (Mata-Au) River is at the heart of our district. This emerald green gem is New Zealand's largest, fastest and most voluminous river.

The flow is so rapid it could be put up against some of The World's giants like the Amazon River.

The Tuapeka Punt runs daily and operates by the rapid flow of the Clutha River. It is the last ferry of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

A short drive north of the Tuapeka Punt you will find the Rongahere Gorge. Travel along the river, surrounding by lush bush.

The Clutha River was the focus of the 1860's Otago gold rush, and today is the centre piece of the Clutha Gold Cycle Trail taking you through to Lawrence.

It flows under the famous Balclutha Bridge, down to Kaitangata, past the island of Inch Clutha where it is released out to the Pacific Ocean.

The emerald hue comes from glacial melting at its source above Lake Wanaka.
