The Lawrence Chinese Camp will be celebrating Chinese New Year with a Festival on Sunday  29 January 2023 at the Lawrence Chinese Camp, 116 Beaumont Highway, Lawrence. We hope that you can join us!

A community event, the Chinese New Year festivities at the Lawrence Chinese Camp will include lion dances from teams from Christchurch and Dunedin, professional Chinese music performances and traditional Chinese dance performances throughout the celebration, as well as children’s activities with a Chinese cultural flavour. Master pig roasters from around New Zealand and cooks from the Otago-Southland Chinese Association will prepare Chinese food for sale to fundraise for the Camp’s restoration. The flyer is attached.

During the festival, there will be a Launch of Chinese Local Histories Classroom Lessons. 2023 hails a new Aotearoa Histories school curriculum which includes Chinese local history. Fittingly, the first lesson plans for teaching our New Zealand Chinese migrant stories will be launched at the Lawrence Chinese Camp - the cradle of Chinese beginnings in Otago.  The telling of the long history of Chinese in New Zealand in schools is an important milestone for the local Chinese community. The launch will include addresses by the educational resources developer Sun Gum Saan Limited's Chairperson Malcolm Wong, mana whenua Edward Ellison, Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon, a central government representative and a representative from the Chinese Consulate.

Dress Code: Wear auspicious reddish colours (red, orange, burgundy, peach, pink). No all-over black, white or blue.

Entry free but a gold coin donation towards the Camp's restoration would be appreciated.
