The Blue Mountains and the Pomahaka River provide the perfect backdrop to the friendly farming town of Tapanui, located in West Otago. Visitors, hikers, and hunters have plenty on offer where lush rainforest leads the way through Whisky Gully and Black Gully for easy day walks. Take on the more adventurous trek to the top of the Blue Mountains and pass through territory of one of the largest remaining populations of the rare yellowhead (mohua).

Nearby Leithen Glen Reserve with its lavish lawns and stone barbecues is a lovely spot to relax or meander the Blue Mountain Nursery, which specialises in the propagation and growing of rhododendrons.

Stretch the legs and the lines and enjoy some of New Zealand’s finest trout fishing in Pomahaka River or take on the 18 hole golf course that sits centre stage in town.

Even Hollywood has been seduced by Tapanui’s charm and stunning setting with the town featuring in the Disney blockbuster Pete’s Dragon. Discover more things to see and do in Tapanui or keep up to date on all things local right here.
