Tapanui, located in West Otago, is a friendly farming town with thriving independent shops, the Pomahaka River running through and the Blue Mountains providing a beautiful backdrop. There are plenty of terrific trails for walkers, hikers and mountain bikers.

Hunters roam the forests while Whisky Gully and Black Gully offer gentle rambles through native bush or testing treks to the top of the Blue Mountains. The area has one of the largest remaining populations of the increasingly rare mohua bird or yellowhead as it is also known.

Meander the Blue Mountain Nursery who specialise in the propagation and growing of rhododendrons.

The Pomahaka River has some of New Zealand’s finest trout fishing, while Leithen Glen with its lavish lawns and stone barbecues is a lovely spot to relax.

Kelso’s historic buildings and monuments offer something completely different as does the 1885 Todd Cottage in nearby Heriot. There is a great 18 hole golf course in Tapanui if you fancy a round.

Even Hollywood has been seduced by Tapanui’s charm and stunning setting with the town featuring as the fictional Millhaven in the blockbuster Pete’s Dragon.
