MEDIA RELEASE 17 December 2020
You haven’t seen New Zealand until you’ve stayed a while in Clutha, that’s the message from Clutha Development who today launched a campaign encouraging Kiwis to visit the district this summer.
Clutha Development is the Economic Development Agency and Regional Tourism Organisation for the Clutha District, which includes the Catlins, historic Lawrence – site of one of the world’s largest and fastest ever gold rushes – and the Clutha Gold Cycling and Walking Trail.
Unique and unspoilt, Clutha offers lush rain forest, dramatic coastlines, white sandy beaches, big surf and show stopping waterfalls. Gems include Nugget Point, Cathedral Caves and the triple tiered Purakaunui Falls. It also boasts rare wildlife like a NZ fur seal colony, elephant seal and yellow-eyed penguins.
But it’s the people who really give Clutha its essence, says Linda Moore, CEO of Clutha Development.
That’s why the ‘stay a while’ campaign video features local personalities who run Clutha businesses, including Jared at Catlins Kayak and Adventure, Jude of Mata-Au Lodge and Lawrence Bike Transfers, Tom who operates the ferry at Tuapeka Mouth - known as The Punt - and Lyndon who, along with wife Gill, owns Mohua Park Eco Accommodation in Tawanui, offering guided scenic and wildlife tours.
“People often say ‘the further South you go, the friendlier people are’ and that is definitely true in our case. We wanted to capture our genuinely warm and welcoming spirit through highlighting real people you can actually meet on your travels this summer,” says Linda Moore.
“Whether you’re an adventurer, a history buff or something in between, Clutha lets you take a journey off the beaten track and celebrate unique wildlife, natural beauty and heritage. There really is something for everyone. Once you get here, it’s our people who will make you want to stay a while.”
