Tucked on the northern boundary of the spectacular coast, Kaka Point has stunning scenery and a wealth of wildlife. This seaside village is perfect for a relaxing escape to get back to nature, and offers excellent surfing and swimming spots. Visit the iconic Nugget Point Lighthouse (Tokatā) and Roaring Bay nearby, where you have opportunities to view yellow-eyed penguin (hoiho) and fur seals. Kaka Point is an ideal place to begin to explore the natural wonders of The Catlins Coast.
30km south-east of Balclutha, this windswept peninsula with its historic lighthouse (dating to 1869) is home to southern fur seals, native sealions, elephant seals and yellow-eyed penguins. There are also numerous seabirds, including gannets and shags. "The Nuggets" is an iconic landmark for the Catlins, and no travel photo album would be complete without a picture of the breath-taking peninsula.
It is possible to cycle the 8.5km from Kaka Point to the beginning of this walk, taking in the amazing coastal scenery. Please note there are a number of steep inclines on the road to Nugget Point, and bikes are not allowed on the walking track itself.
