Tapanui is situated in West Otago, and known as being a friendly farming town. The Blue Mountains provides a wonderful backdrop to this small town, while the Pomahaka River runs nearby.
If you are looking to experience the great outdoors, don't go past this wonderful wild place with various tracks and trails through the bush with waterfalls and other hidden gems to discover. Tapanui boasts some of the best fly fishing in New Zealand, as well as plenty of hunting opportunities. If you fancy a round of golf, there is a great 18 hole golf course in Tapanui.
Whisky Gully and Black Gully are lovely little jaunts while the more challenging and longer ridgetop hike is well worth the work for the simply amazing views. Keep an eye out for the yellowhead or mohua bird, one of the largest remaining populations of this species can be found in West Otago.
There are a number of places to dine for lunch or dinner, otherwise there is a local 4 Square Supermarket or butchery available. If you are after a memento of your visit, check out the unique gift stores along the main street.
Tapanui's real claim to fame was the Hollywood blockbuster Pete’s Dragon. The town's charm and stunning setting featured as the fictional town of Millhaven in the movie.
